Why Routine Screening Catches Problems Early

Many serious conditions, from hypertension to certain cancers, develop quietly for years before symptoms appear. Here's why regular check-ups matter even when you feel perfectly well.

It is a common assumption that a hospital or diagnostic visit is only necessary when something feels wrong. In reality, many of the conditions that cause the most harm, high blood pressure, diabetes, early-stage cancers, and silent heart disease, often produce no noticeable symptoms in their earliest and most treatable stages.

Routine screening changes the odds. A simple blood pressure check, a fasting blood sugar test, or a periodic ultrasound can flag a developing problem long before it becomes an emergency. Early detection generally means simpler treatment, shorter recovery, and significantly better long-term outcomes.

As a general guide, adults should have their blood pressure and blood sugar checked at least once a year, with more frequent monitoring if there is a family history of hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease. Women should discuss appropriate breast and cervical screening schedules with their physician, and adults over 40 should speak to their doctor about baseline cardiac and cancer screening appropriate to their risk factors.

If it has been more than a year since your last full check-up, that alone is a good reason to book one.

Understanding Your Blood Pressure Reading

120/80. 140/90. What do these numbers actually mean, and at what point should you be concerned? A simple breakdown of the reading your nurse gives you at every visit.

A blood pressure reading has two numbers. The top number (systolic) measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic) measures the pressure when your heart rests between beats.

As a general guide used by most clinical bodies: a reading below 120/80 mmHg is considered normal. Readings consistently between 120–129/less than 80 are considered elevated. 130/80 and above is generally classified as hypertension, with severity graded further from there. A single high reading is not a diagnosis, blood pressure naturally fluctuates with stress, activity, and even the time of day, but a pattern of elevated readings over several visits is worth discussing with a physician.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure is often called a "silent" condition because it rarely causes obvious symptoms until it has already damaged the heart, kidneys, or blood vessels. This is precisely why routine monitoring, not waiting for symptoms, is the safest approach.

If your reading is consistently above 130/80, or if you experience severe headaches, chest pain, blurred vision, or shortness of breath alongside a high reading, seek medical attention promptly.

Preparing for a CT Scan: What to Expect

Never had a CT scan before? Here's what actually happens, how to prepare, and what to bring so your appointment goes smoothly.

A CT (computed tomography) scan uses a series of X-ray images taken from different angles to build a detailed cross-sectional picture of the body. It is painless and typically takes only a few minutes, though preparation and positioning may take a little longer.

Depending on the area being scanned, you may be asked to fast for four to six hours beforehand, particularly if a contrast dye will be used to improve image clarity. Contrast dye is usually given through an IV line or orally, and it is normal to feel a brief warm sensation when it is administered.

On the day of your scan, wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal fasteners, zips, or jewelry, as metal can interfere with image quality. You will be asked to remove any metal objects, including belts, hairpins, and some undergarments with underwire. Let the radiographer know beforehand if you have any metal implants, a pacemaker, kidney problems, or known allergies to contrast dye, or if there is any possibility you may be pregnant.

Bring your referral letter, any previous scan results relevant to the current complaint, and a valid form of identification. Most patients are able to resume normal activity immediately after the scan, unless sedation was used.

Understanding Your Full Blood Count Results

Red cells, white cells, platelets, your FBC report can look like a wall of numbers. Here's a simple guide to what it's actually telling you.

The Full Blood Count (FBC), sometimes called a Complete Blood Count, is one of the most frequently ordered laboratory tests, and for good reason, it offers a broad snapshot of your overall health in a single sample.

Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body; a low count or low haemoglobin often points to anaemia, which can stem from poor iron intake, blood loss, or chronic illness. White blood cells are part of your immune defence; an elevated count often signals infection or inflammation, while a low count can indicate a weakened immune response. Platelets help your blood clot, very low levels can mean easy bruising or bleeding, while very high levels are sometimes linked to inflammation or clotting disorders.

It's important to remember that a single abnormal value rarely tells the whole story on its own. Your physician interprets your FBC alongside your symptoms, history, and sometimes follow-up tests before drawing any conclusions.

If your results include a flag or an asterisk beside any value, don't panic, bring the report to your doctor, who can explain what it means in the context of your specific health picture.

What to Expect During an Ultrasound Scan

Whether it's an abdominal scan, an obstetric scan, or an echocardiogram, ultrasound is quick, painless, and needs almost no preparation. Here's what actually happens.

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, not radiation, to create real-time images of organs, blood vessels, or a developing baby. This makes it one of the safest imaging tools available, suitable even for pregnant women and children.

During the scan, a small amount of gel is applied to your skin to help the probe glide smoothly and improve contact. The sonographer or radiologist then moves the probe gently over the area being examined while watching the images on a screen. Most scans take between ten and thirty minutes and cause no discomfort beyond mild pressure.

Preparation depends on what's being scanned. An abdominal ultrasound often requires several hours of fasting so gas doesn't obscure the view, while a pelvic or obstetric scan may require a full bladder to improve image clarity. Your booking instructions will specify exactly what's needed for your particular scan.

Results are typically reviewed by a radiologist and can often be discussed with your referring doctor on the same day or shortly after.

Diabetes: Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

Excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained fatigue, many people live with undiagnosed diabetes for years. Here are the signs worth acting on.

Type 2 diabetes, the most common form seen in adults, often develops gradually, which is exactly why so many cases go undetected until complications appear. Recognising the early warning signs can make a real difference to how the condition is managed.

Common symptoms include unusual thirst, frequent urination, especially at night, persistent fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds, and unexplained weight loss despite normal or increased appetite. Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet can also be an early sign, as prolonged high blood sugar affects nerve function over time.

Certain factors raise your risk further: a family history of diabetes, carrying excess weight particularly around the abdomen, high blood pressure, a sedentary lifestyle, and age above 40. If any of these apply to you, a routine fasting blood sugar or HbA1c test is a simple, worthwhile precaution, even without symptoms.

The earlier diabetes is identified, the more manageable it is through diet, physical activity, and, where necessary, medication, so testing early is always better than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

Why Antenatal Screening Matters for Expectant Mothers

Regular scans and lab checks during pregnancy do more than confirm a baby is growing well, they catch complications early, for both mother and child.

Antenatal care is built around a schedule of check-ups precisely because pregnancy can change quickly, and many complications, such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, or abnormal fetal positioning, develop without obvious symptoms in their early stages.

Routine antenatal visits typically combine blood pressure checks, urine tests, blood work (including blood group, genotype, and screening for infections such as HIV and hepatitis), and ultrasound scans at key stages of pregnancy to track the baby's growth and development.

Ultrasound in particular allows the sonographer to confirm gestational age, check the position of the placenta, monitor fetal growth, and detect certain structural concerns early enough to plan appropriately with your obstetrician.

Missing antenatal visits, especially in the third trimester, means losing the window to catch problems while they are still manageable. If you are pregnant and have not started antenatal care, it is never too late to begin.

Living Well With Hypertension: Diet and Lifestyle Tips

A hypertension diagnosis isn't a life sentence of restriction, it's a signal to make a few consistent changes that genuinely move the numbers.

High blood pressure is managed as much through daily habits as through medication, and small, consistent changes tend to matter more than dramatic short-term ones.

Reducing salt intake is one of the most effective steps, this means cutting back not just on table salt, but on the hidden sodium in bouillon cubes, processed and canned foods, and salted snacks that are common in many Nigerian diets. Increasing potassium-rich foods such as bananas, beans, and leafy vegetables helps balance sodium's effects on blood pressure.

Regular physical activity, even a brisk 30-minute walk most days of the week, has a measurable effect on blood pressure over time. Limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, and avoiding tobacco all compound these benefits further.

Medication, where prescribed, should never be stopped or adjusted without your doctor's guidance, even if you start feeling well, hypertension has no symptoms in most people, so feeling fine is not a reliable indicator that it's under control.

Endoscopy: Common Myths and the Real Facts

Worried about an upcoming endoscopy? It's quicker and far less unpleasant than most people expect. Here's what's fact and what's just fear.

An endoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a small camera to examine the digestive tract directly, often to investigate persistent heartburn, unexplained abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, or to follow up on abnormal lab results. Despite how it sounds, the procedure itself is usually brief, typically well under thirty minutes.

Myth: It's extremely painful. In reality, most patients are given a sedative or local anaesthetic spray beforehand, and describe the sensation as uncomfortable at most, not painful. Many don't remember much of the procedure at all if sedation is used.

Myth: You can't go back to normal activity afterward. Depending on whether sedation was used, most patients rest briefly at the centre and can resume light activity the same day, though driving yourself home isn't advised if you were sedated.

Myth: It's only for older patients. Endoscopy is recommended based on symptoms and risk factors, not age alone, persistent digestive symptoms at any adult age are worth discussing with a gastroenterologist, who can determine if the procedure is appropriate for you.

Understanding Stroke Risk and the Transcranial Doppler

A Transcranial Doppler scan looks at blood flow in the brain's vessels, often recommended for patients with stroke risk factors before symptoms ever appear.

Stroke remains one of the leading causes of long-term disability, and much of that risk builds silently through narrowed or restricted blood vessels long before any obvious symptom occurs. A Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a non-invasive ultrasound-based scan that measures the speed and pattern of blood flow through the arteries at the base of the brain, helping identify narrowing, blockages, or abnormal flow patterns.

Doctors commonly recommend a TCD for patients with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, a history of smoking, sickle cell disease, or a family history of stroke, as well as for patients who have experienced symptoms like sudden dizziness, brief vision changes, or a previous mini-stroke (TIA).

The scan itself is painless, takes around 30–45 minutes, and requires no special preparation. A probe is placed against specific areas of the skull where the bone is thinnest, allowing sound waves to pass through to the vessels beneath.

Identifying restricted blood flow early gives your physician the chance to manage risk factors more aggressively, potentially preventing a stroke rather than only responding to one after it happens.

MRI vs CT Scan: What's the Difference?

Both produce detailed internal images, but they work very differently, and your doctor's choice between them isn't random. Here's how to understand it.

CT (Computed Tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) are both powerful diagnostic tools, but they rely on completely different technology and are suited to different clinical questions.

A CT scan uses a series of X-ray images to build detailed cross-sections of the body, and is especially fast and effective for viewing bone, detecting internal bleeding, and assessing trauma or chest and abdominal conditions, our 64-slice CT can capture very detailed images in a short scan time.

An MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves rather than radiation, and excels at imaging soft tissue in fine detail, brain tissue, ligaments, spinal discs, and joints. It typically takes longer than a CT scan and involves lying inside an enclosed scanner, which some patients find requires a bit more patience.

Neither is universally "better", your referring physician selects the scan best suited to what they need to see. If you have any metal implants, a pacemaker, or experience claustrophobia, let the radiology team know in advance, as this may affect which scan is recommended or how it's conducted.

Managing Chronic Pain: When to See a Specialist

Pain that lingers for weeks or months isn't something to just "push through." Here's how to know when it's time for specialist care.

Pain is considered chronic when it persists for more than three months, often outlasting the original injury or illness that caused it. Unlike acute pain, which serves as a clear warning signal, chronic pain can become a condition in its own right, affecting sleep, mood, mobility, and overall quality of life.

Common sources include chronic back and joint pain, nerve-related pain (such as from diabetes or shingles), post-surgical pain, and pain linked to conditions like arthritis. Many people manage early symptoms with over-the-counter medication, but when pain persists despite this, or begins to interfere with daily activities, work, or sleep, it's a sign to seek specialist evaluation rather than continuing to self-manage.

A pain management specialist looks beyond just masking symptoms, evaluating the underlying cause and building a tailored plan that may include targeted medication, physical therapy referrals, nerve blocks, or minimally invasive procedures depending on the source of the pain.

If pain has lasted more than a few weeks without improvement, or is worsening rather than settling, that's a reasonable point to book a consultation rather than waiting it out further.
